David is a member of the American, Iowa and Johnson County Bar associations. David serves on the American Bar Association’s Art & Cultural Heritage Law Committee. He is also a member of the Committee’s Steering Group and serves as Co-Editor of the Committee’s newsletter. David serves as a member of the Iowa State Bar Association's YLD Publicity Committee (2002-) and served as Chair of that Committee (2004-2010). David also serves the Johnson County Bar Association as Chair of the Social Committee, Co-Chair of the Nominating Committee and Co-Chair of the Oral History Project Committee.
David is also active in many local charities. He is a current member of the Elder Services, Inc. Board of Directors (Finance and Personnel Committees), Cedar Rapids Metropolitan YMCA Board of Directors (Finance Committee), YMCA Camp Wapsie Advisory Committee (Program and Marketing Subcommittees) and University of Iowa Museum of Art Members Council. David is also the Co-Chair of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan YMCA Annual Strong Kids Campaign.
David is a past member and past President of the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation Board of Directors. He also formerly served on the Johnson County Dog Park Action Committee Board of Directors and one of the United Way of Johnson County's Community Impact Councils. David also recently served at the appointment of University of Iowa President Sally Mason, on the University of Iowa Museum of Art’s Museum Envisioning Committee.
During law school, David worked as a Research Assistant to Professor of Law and President Emeritus Willard L. “Sandy” Boyd and assisted Professor Boyd in the formation of the Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center. David also assisted former Professor Patricia A. Cain with the formation of the Nonprofit Legal Clinic at the University of Iowa College of Law’s Clinical Law Programs. David is a frequent speaker on issues related to business formation, estate planning, art law, and nonprofit/tax exempt organizations.
