Jean is a member of the American, Iowa and Johnson County Bar Associations, serving as President of the Johnson County Bar Association 1980–81. She has lectured in the areas of Probate, Estate Planning and Real Estate at Bar Association seminars and community groups.

She served on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State Bar Association 1981-85; Chair – Continuing Legal Education Committee of the State Bar 1985-91; Chair – Annual Meeting Committee of the State Bar 1992-94; Board of Trustees of Iowa State Bar Foundation 1994-present; and President 1996-98; Fellow – Iowa State Bar Foundation, President 1995-96; Director – Iowa Lawyers Assistance Program since 1995; Recipient of the prestigious Iowa State Bar Association Award of Merit 1995.

Jean practiced in Iowa City since 1961 as partner in Bartley and Bartley Law firm and as a sole practitioner.
