Nonprofit and Charitable Organizations

The Charitable Organizations Practice Group provides representation to many nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, including churches, foundations and care centers. In conjunction with our Estate Planning and Probate Practice Group, we also offer counseling and representation with charitable giving.

We represent clients in the formation of new nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, including public charities and private foundations. This process begins with a determination of whether or not the clients’ needs or wants will be met with the formation of a nonprofit or tax-exempt organization. We then assist clients with the selection of the most appropriate entity for their purposes and we offer guidance on the development of mission statements, business plans, bylaws and policies and procedures.

We also assist existing nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations with ongoing issues, including matters of employment and management. We strive to offer preventative assistance to clients by keeping apprised of developments in the laws that affect their interests and organizations. We also advise clients on topics specific to the areas of nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, including lobbying, political activity and unrelated business income.
